KUCHING – Since lunar New Year is just around the corner, Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS Baru) would like to wish all fellow Chinese comrades and communities a very happy Chinese New Year 2018. The start of the lunar year begins in February, and millions of people across the world will be gathering with family to get out the firecrackers and celebrate Chinese New Year.
“This February denotes the beginning of the Year of the Dog, defined by the Chinese zodiac cycle. The Year of the Dog begins on February 16, 2018. Celebrations will last until March 2nd – about 15 days in total – making this the longest holiday in the Chinese calendar”, the party said.
Chinese New Year takes place on a different date every year, because it is based on the lunar calendar.
In this calendar a month is two days shorter than in the solar calendar so to make up for it an extra month is added every few years.
Each year is denoted by a different symbol from the Chinese 12 year animal zodiac, with this year being matched to the tenth sign. Last year was the Year of the Rooster.
“Chinese calendar combines solar, lunar and 60 Stem-Branch counting systems. The 60 Stem-Branch calendar uses the names of Yin Yang Five Elements (Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth) and 12 animals to rank the sequences. Five elements are connected to five colors – White, Black, Green, Red, and Brown. So Chinese use the color animal name to count the year. The name of 2018 is the Yang Male Earth Dog. Brown is connected to Earth. Therefore, 2018 is also called Brown Earth Dog Year”, the party said.
“The first day of the Brown Dog is not the Chinese New Year in Chinese Astrology. The first day of the Tiger month is the first day of the Chinese Astrology year. This day is called Start of Spring, which is the date when the sun enters the 315th degree on the tropical zodiac. This day is around February 4, each year. 2018 Chinese Brown Dog starts on February 4, 2018 in China’s time zone. That means Chinese Lunar New Year is not the first day of Brown Dog Year. If a baby is born February 5, 2018, then baby’s zodiac sign is the Dog, not Chicken”, said PBDS Baru.
In Chinese astrology, Earth is also connected to stability, meditation and religion. Many people will be interested in spiritual or religious study.
The mountain of 2018 appearing in the front of us means something is blocking our view or our path. That’s a sign of obstacle. We need to climb over it to see the other world. So we need to find a flat road around the mountains to find our way. Either way, we need to take extra effort to reach our destination. Therefore, 2018 is a challenge year for many people. We need to use our wisdom to find the better way to conquer the mountains. If you can do it, then you will be ahead of many others. If you cannot, then you will behind the world.
The mountains of 2018 are related to stability, slowness, stubborn, laziness and conservativeness. If you are too lazy and lack of the diligent spirit, then you will miss career or money opportunity. Fruits on the tree had ripened. If we don’t pick and sell them right away, then they will be rotten very soon. That implies we need to complete our unfinished project quickly. Otherwise, our income source will disappear soon.
“Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS Baru) had learned to understand the Chinese communities culture and religious belief. Being Sarawakians, we are born into a multiracial society which does not require a policy to enforced respect and honour amongst the multiracial communities, which is why Sarawakians do not want extremism to be promoted in Sarawak as only in Sarawak, religion and relationships amongst society are truly secular in nature”, the party said.
If PBDS Baru could honour the year of the brown earth dog for the Chinese communities, in return, PBDS Baru duly hope that those whom has criticism about PBDS Baru choice of mascot, to be more open minded and be out of the box in their mentality. Not everything has to be based on political criticism, we are Sarawakians, we know better about how a secular nation should be and also the way of living in a democratic multiracial, multireligious, multicultural communities should lived.
PBDS Baru is proud to say that we are proud to be Sarawakians, with secular state concept mentality and equality. GOD created human to be equal with each other, to respect each other’s and its indifference of each tribal culture.
PBDS Baru would like to wish all Chinese Malaysian a Happy Lunar Chinese New Year and may more blessings be upon all citizens of Malaysia this 2018.
